The International Center for Development Studies (ICDS) offers its affiliated academic institutions the possibility of developing customized programs --at undergraduate and graduate level-- run jointly with ICDS, such as faculty-led programs focusing on topics within ICDS’ areas of expertise and intended to give participant students and faculty insights on the challenges faced by Costa Rica and other Latin American countries to secure the sustainability of their development.
ICDS takes advantage of the practical experience and knowledge of its multidisciplinary team to share with customized program participants the outcomes of its ongoing research, aiming to contribute to their understanding of the profound changes under way in Latin America.
As a recent example of the customized programs offered, ICDS joined forces with the Law and Policy Doctoral Program of Northeastern University, and together designed a seminar which focused on the different dimensions of development of Costa Rica, human rights and justice, globalization and trade, governance, as well as the relations of Latin America with the world, in particular, the United States. In the words of Dr. Timothy Howard, Director of the Law and Policy Doctoral Program at Northeastern University, the seminar represented a great opportunity for an “immersion into the inside perspective and knowledge so that [participants] can feel and absorb the socially constructed methods of law and policy in another country distinct from [their] own.” For further details about the Law & Policy Doctoral Program Costa Rica Seminar 2009, please visit the LPD web site at
