With a highly qualified and professional international team, ICDS organizes a great variety of technical and educational programs, providing international students with the opportunity to sharpen their Spanish skills, gain an understanding of Central and Latin America's cultural richness and acquire in depth knowledge and hands-on experience on the challenges of cultural diversity, environment, and development in the region.
Currently ICDS offers two study abroad programs during the spring and fall semesters, “Human Rights, and Development in Latin America" and “Environment, Sustainability and Development in Latin America." Both programs are interdisciplinary and highly participatory, and offer experiential learning opportunities through field trips and site visits related to the course subjects. ICDS programs offer students the chance for complete cultural and language immersion through homestays with local families and by the progressive incorporation of their developing Spanish skills into the course dynamics, thus making the programs practically bilingual.
Also, ICDS offers two summer programs during the second summer session (July-early August): “International Business for development Studies” and “Spanish for Development Studies”.
ICDS’s partner for these programs is
Universidad Latina de Costa Rica (ULatina), the largest private university in Costa Rica, with a student body of 16,000. With its modern facilities, advanced equipment, experienced and efficient staff, and extensive student services, ULatina provides the perfect environment to run ICDS's highly participatory programs, also involving local students, further adding to both the academic and the cultural experience.
At an international level, ICDS works with various American universities, such as Villanova University, Drexel University, Northeastern University, Boston College, Kalamazoo College, and The George Washington University, and has also hosted students from several other schools in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
The International Center for Development Studies (ICDS) is a non-profit organization aimed to promote international education. As such, ICDS provides affiliated U.S. institutions with a Latin American venue specializing in international development and education through the carrying out of applied research, international academic programs for both local and US students, as well as the creation of a center for technical language-learning.
